Lymphoedema is the swelling of an area of the body, usually seen in the arms or legs which can be painful and debilitating. I offer the full range of the various techniques used to manage lymphoedema.
Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor offers the full range of techniques available to manage and treat lymphoedema depending on your needs.
Sometimes lymphoedema can be treated with simple compression bandages and garments.
Sometimes liposuction can be used to alleviate the swelling and involves almost no scarring.
Lymphaticovenous Anastomosis (LVA) is a surgical procedure to reconnnect damaged lympatic vessels to allow the drainage of fluid from the affected limb.
VLNT is a complex procedure that requires specialised surgical skills and microsurgical techniques. Free vascularisd lymph node transfer (VLNT) involves transplanting healthy lymph nodes, along with their blood supply, from a healthy area of the body to the affected limb to restore lymphatic drainage.
Lymphoedema can be painful and debilitating and psychologically difficult, living with a limb out of proportion to the rest of your body.
Patients with lymphoedema after a traumatic injury
Patients with lymphoedema after cancer and/or surgical removal of cancer
Patients with lymphoedema from birth
There are a number of techniques which require very little in the way of scarring. Liposuction involves almost no scarring, whilst with LVA surgery the scars are less than 3-4cm long.
I perform all of my operations at leading London hospitals with full emergency care available. As with any surgical procedure, it's essential to discuss risks Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor so you are fully informed of what you are undertaking.
While most patients experience no significant complications, potential risks include:
Post-operative infection is rare but generally treated easily with antibiotics.
Bleeding after surgery can lead to a haematoma which might need further surgery to manage.
All surgery causes scarring. Scars generally fade to a thin white line but rarely patients can develop raised red scars, such as hypertrophic or keloid scars.
Persistent lymph fluid leakage from surgical sites may require intervention or prolonged wound care.
Surgery can inadvertently aggravate swelling if lymphatic flow is further compromised.
Sometimes superficial sensory nerves can be affected and it can take up to 2 years for sensation to return.
