A lipoma is one of the most common types of soft tissue lumps found under the skin. A liopma is a non-cancerous tumour made up of fat tissue. Lipomas can be removed with simple surgical excision or sometimes liposuction which benefits from a very small scar.
Lipomas can grow slowly and become large and unsightly. They can be prominent and uncomfortable. There are also rare forms of cancer that have a very similar presentation to lipomas.
A lipoma can be removed during a consultation appointment at one of my outpatient clinics.
The size of the lipoma will determine the size of the scar. The general rule is the scar will be half the length of the lipoma.
In terms of how your scars will heal and fade over time, everyone is different and the appearance will depend on skin tone, elasticity and how your skin heals.
All the stitches are dissovable and you can return to work the same day.
Simple dressings will be supplied if necessary.
