A skin cyst is a closed sac-like lump under the skin, usually filled with fluid or keratin.
Cysts are generally slow growing and noncancerous. They can be removed under local anaesthetic in an outpatient clinic.
A mole is made up of pigment producing cells which give a brown, black or flesh coloured appearance. If a mole changes colour, shape, or starts to itch or bleed it requires removal under local anaesthetic and testing.
A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumor made up of fat tissue. However there are rare forms of cancer that have a very similar presentation to lipomas. Lipomas are nearly always removable under local anaesthetic, irrespective of size.
The main types of skin cancer are: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. All skin cancers require intervention - generally a surgical excision - but in low risk situations can involve treatment with creams.
A wart is a small, rough growth on the skin caused by a viral infection, specifically human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts can be treated in various ways from cream treatments, to freezing with nitrogen spray and surgical removal.
A skin tag is a small, soft, benign growth of skin that hangs off the body and is very common, especially as people age. A skin tag can be removed using a local anesthetic in under 5 minutes.
