Gyanecomastia affects men and can comprise of three elements: excess breast tissue, excess skin and excess fat. Gyanecomastia surgery is the removal of one or more of these from the male chest wall.
Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor performs all of his surgeries himself.
Gyanecomastia surgery can involve the removal of excess breast tissue, excess skin and excess fat. The more soft tissue that needs to be removed, the more scarring is required to achieve a flat chest.
The simplest form of gynaecomastia is generally excess breast tissue sitting behind the nipples. This presents itself as puffy nipples in warm weather and no matter how much exercising you do it doesn't reduce.
After significant weight loss, gynaecomastia surgery generally requires the removal of excess skin as well as fat and breast tissue.
Liposuction is invariably needed to help contour the chest into a natural shape.
Gynaecomastia can impact your self image and body confidence tremendously. You may want to consider surgery if you:
If the shape of your chest is a significant concern and prevents you from taking your top off in public.
If the shape of your chest is a significant concern and prevents you from wearing certain clothes.
Are happy to accept the risks, limitations and have realistic expectations.
Are able to maintain good health and a stable weight.
The scars in simple gynacomatisa surgery are expected to be minor and very discreet, with incisions only within the areola and one small 3mm incision in the armpit for the liposuction.
In terms of how your scars will heal and fade over time, everyone is different and the appearance will depend on skin tone, elasticity and how your skin heals.
Gynaecomastia surgery is not a minor procedure and you should understand the recovery process and the preparations in your daily life and time off from work that may be required to help you through it.
Most patients are back to light activity after 1 to 2 weeks, but full recovery may take up to 6 weeks.
Most patients report significant relief from physical discomfort immediately after surgery, with an improved silhouette.
Your incisions will be covered with simple hypoallergenic tape and you will be in a compression garment which you must wear day and night for 6 weeks.
Generally you can shower on day one - just pat dry your chest and go back into the compression garment.
For the first few days, as the anaesthesia wears off, you may feel in pain and may need to take over the counter pain relief regularly and at night. During this time you must take it easy, staying home and only pottering around, so you may need help with childcare, housework or other duties. Swelling generally is the worst in the first week.
Most patients are back to light activity after 1 to 2 weeks and can resume driving after two weeks.
Physical activities such as exercise should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
You will have a follow-up appointment with Mr Fitzgerald O'Connor after week 6.
All operations are carried out at leading London hospitals with full emergency care available. As with any surgical procedure, it's essential we discuss the risks together so you are fully informed of what you are undertaking.
While most patients experience no significant complications, potential risks include:
Superficial infections may occur but are generally treatable with simple antibiotics.
Rare collections of blood under the skin may require surgical intervention, this will be done at no extra cost.
Some scarring may be darker or lumpy or thicker than desired but typically improves over time. Scarring can take up to 2 years to fully fade. The scars in simple gynacomatisa are expected to be nearly invisible
Dissolvable sutures can sometimes irritate the skin before they dissolve.
Fluid accumulation under the skin can be drained in Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor clinic if it occurs. This generally only occurs if you overdo it in the recovery phase.
Some areas may take longer to heal, usually managed with dressings. THis is more apparent if you have had bariatric surgery.
It is a fine balance of how much tissue to remove, rarely you can develop contour defects or regrowth of breast tissue , especially if gynecomastia is related to testosterone supplementation.
Simple Gynaecomastia surgery costs from £8,000.
Cost includes hospital fee, surgical fee and anaesthetic fee. Pre and post consultations with Mr Fitzgerald O'Connor are also included as well as 24/7 access to a specialist plastic surgery nurse.
