After Weight Loss

Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure designed to tighten the skin and muscles of the abdomen. It involves the removal of excess skin and fat that cannot be reduced with diet and exercise alone, to create a flatter, firmer and tighter abdominal appearance. This does come with a scar that goes from hip to hip in the pant line.

What's involved?

Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor performs all of his surgeries himself. This operation removes excess skin, sometimes, but not always, the use of liposuction to help define the waist and often requires the stitching of the weakened central abdominal muscles.

About Abdominoplasty

Who is it for?

A tummy tuck helps restore the abdominal area after weight loss in patients that can maintain a stable weight. It is not to be used as a method of weight loss. You may be a good candidate for abdominoplasty surgery if you:

Have excess skin or tissue around the abdomen.

Have a loss of muscle tone in the stomach area or separation of your abdominal muscles, known as “rectus divarication”.

Are able to maintain good health and a stable weight.

Are not planning to become pregnant in the future.

Are to accept a scar that goes from hip to hip, in the pant line.

Scarring

In procedures like this there is always a trade off between the size of scars and tightness of the skin. The tighter the skin the longer the scar.

The scar for an abdominoplasty is typically from hip to hip and low down in the underwear line. In terms of how the scars will heal and fade over time, everyone is different and the appearance will depend on skin tone, elasticity and how your skin heals.

Recovery

An abdominoplasty is not a minor procedure so you should understand the recovery process and the preparations in your daily life that may be required to help you through it.

Anecdotally patients have told me that recovery can be similar or easier than with a cesarean section and that people start to feel normal again after 2 weeks.

All my patients have 24/7 direct access to a specialist plastics nurse who is on hand to offer advice, answer any questions or deal with any concerns that may arise.
